Bad Fit Sectors
There are some sectors that aren’t the right fit for the Lightspeed Retail platform. See details on why below:
Hospitality – cafes, restaurants, food trucks, bars
Lightspeed Retail cannot do the below, but there are some workarounds.
- Expiry date tracking: N/A – Refer to Lightspeed Hospitality product.
- Ingredients tracking/wastage: Product Wastage via selling items at $0 to customer “wastage” (negatively impacts margins, not recommended).
- Table service / table mapping: N/A – Refer to Lightspeed Hospitality product.
- Bump screens to the kitchen: N/A – Refer to Lightspeed Hospitality product.
- Modified line items: Manually add as individual products or written as a note under line item.
- Multiple receipt printers: Only available on iPad.
Grocery/Wholefoods
Lightspeed Retail cannot do the below, but there are some workarounds.
- Expiry date tracking/wastage: N/A – Refer to Lightspeed Hospitality product.
- Scale Integration: Set up product with the per kg amount, weigh and manually enter weight into Lightspeed.
- Wastage: Product Wastage via selling items at $0 to customer “wastage” (negatively impacts margins, not recommended).
- On Shelf Ticketing: This can be achieved through a third party integration.
- Customer Facing Display: Available on iPad only.
Liquor Stores who sell mainstream labels
Lightspeed Retail cannot do the below, but there are some workarounds.
- On Shelf Ticketing: This can be achieved through a third party integration.
- Integration with their wholesale ordering platform (CUB, Lion, etc): N/A – No integration exists.
- Scanning invoices to receive: N/A – Currently not available.
Trade Supplies/ Landscaping/ Engineering
Lightspeed Retail cannot do the below, but there are some workarounds.
- Manufacturing specs (ie. custom orders): Notes and setting up non-tracked inventory items to charge for standard things like production time as required.
- Backorders: Lightspeed X-Series now has the ability to allocate received inventory with an unfulfilled order.
- Wastage (landscaping related): Product Wastage via selling items at $0 to customer “wastage” (negatively impacts margins, not recommended).
- Packing slips for deliveries for in-store orders: Gift Receipt (not editable) or edit the receipt template to hide pricing. External integrations can assist with this.
- End of Month Statements: Available through third party software or through an accounting integration.
Wholesale/ Manufacturing/ Consignment
Lightspeed Retail cannot do the below, but there are some workarounds.
- Selling on behalf of Suppliers or individuals on Consignment: Tag product as Consignment, report on sales by tag. Retailer then organises payment to supplier/ individual.
- Wholesale requirements: Setting up Wholesale customers and charging according to Price Books or Promotions.
- Manufacturing: Manually calculating landed costs (not recommended). Available through third party integration.
- Selling to customers on Consignment: Set up a separate Outlet in Lightspeed to allocate Consignment stock to, process as a normal sale from that Outlet when sold. Track which customers have what stock separately to Lightspeed manually.
- Wholesale Portal: Set it up in ecommerce, not in Lightspeed. Noting that Lightspeed will only push the Retail Price to ecommerce so they need to set up the wholesale pricing separately in their ecommerce and create the B2B portal in there.
- Bin Locations: Available through third party integration.
Online Only
Lightspeed Retail cannot do the below, but there are some workarounds.
- Wholesale Pricing: Price books/Promotions do not sync online. Will have to manually amend this directly online.
- Picking & Packing: Handled by eCommerce, not in Lightspeed. Exception with Lightspeed eComm.
- Wholesale Portal: Set up in eCommerce. Noting that Lightspeed will only push the Retail Price to eCommerce so will need to set up the wholesale pricing separately in eCommerce site and create the B2B portal there.
- Bin Locations: Available through third party integration.
Businesses with Service and Hire components
Lightspeed Retail cannot do the below, but there are some workarounds.
- Made to order/ custom products (ie. wedding dresses/ suits/ jewellery): Notes and setting up non-tracked inventory items to charge for standard things like production time as required
- Rentals / Product Hire – inventory tracking only, no calendar functionality needed: Set up hire cost as non-tracked inventory and set up rental items at $0. Process sale and then process a return, delete the hire charge line item and return just the hire items back to inventory.
- Rentals/ Product Hire – with calendar integration required: Available through third party integration.
- Job Tracking: Available through third party integration.
- Customer SMS or email re job completion: Available through third party integration.
Electronics/ Camera Shops/ White goods
Lightspeed Retail cannot do the below, but there are some workarounds.
- Serialisation at time of receiving stock: Workaround will be required if they are looking to track serialisation by batch or at time of receiving stock.
- Backorders: Lightspeed X-Series now has the ability to allocate received inventory with an unfulfilled order. Allocating inventory to an unfulfilled customer order
- On Shelf Ticketing: Available through third party integration.
- Supplier rebates and discounts: Do not receive stock until rebate discount known, manually calculate and update supplier price.
Jewellery Manufacturing
Lightspeed Retail cannot do the below, but there are some workarounds.
- Individual components tracking: Composite products – only recommended for very simple products.
- Multiple variations: Lightspeed is limited to a maximum of 3 variant types (ie. Size + Clarity + Colour) and 200 variations. Jewellery stores tend to have more than 3 variant types.
- Butterfly Labels: Available through third party integration.
- Buying and selling gold: Manually calculate the price of gold.
Furniture
Lightspeed Retail cannot do the below, but there are some workarounds.
- Backorders: Lightspeed X-Series now has the ability to allocate received inventory with an unfulfilled order. Allocating inventory to an unfulfilled customer order
- Custom orders: Notes and setting up non-tracked inventory items to charge for standard things like production time as required. Refer to third party integration.
- Deliveries: N/A – No native integrations – needs a custom integration or a separate standalone system.
