Black Box 2.0 Partner Guide

Belgium introduced new fiscal requirements under GKS 2.0 (Geregistreerd Kassasysteem or Registered Cash Register System) that affect hospitality businesses operating in the country.

Find more information about setup and requirements in this guide.

The GKS 2.0 integration with Lightspeed K-Series will be live, starting from May 4th 2026.

As a result, K-Series has been updated to meet these requirements:

  • GKS 2.0 expands fiscal tracking, strengthens device controls, and logs more events. This increases compliance requirements while enabling new features, such as receipt copies and broader transaction coverage.
  • It also includes a new Fiscal Data Module (FDM), also known as a black box. This version differs from the current one, so please find the hardware requirements below.

Here’s what you need to know:

This is a regulatory change, not a Lightspeed product update.

It requires mandatory registration of the cash register (we’ll do this for you) and the Fiscal Data Module (FDM) on the FPS portal (if not registered, the POS cannot be used).

The FDM must remain connected to the cash register and the internet at all times.

All
businesses

All Horeca businesses exceeding the €25,000 turnover threshold are impacted.

The threshold applies to businesses with an annual turnover of €25,000 or more from on-site meals.

New
businesses

Mandatory from June 30, 2026 for new businesses or businesses switching to a new POS.

The tolerance period for GKS 2.0 has been prolonged until 30th of June.

This means new businesses have a bit more time to start using the FDM 2.0 (Source). Specifically, for customers installing a new system between now and June 30:

If you need to install a certified POS system for your hospitality business between April 1 and June 30, 2027, you have two options:

1. You can register online for GKS 2.0 pending the actual delivery of your POS and FDM. The online environment for communication with the FDM 2.0 is available and will be further expanded in the coming months.

2. You can also choose to install a GKS 1.0 (the current system) to meet your tax obligations during the tolerance period.

Existing businesses

Phased rollout based on when a business started using the 1.0 FDM:

Based on the cash register purchase date:

— If registered before 1st of January 2018: deadline is 1st of July 2027

— If registered before 1st of January 2021: deadline 1st of July 2028

— Everyone: deadline is 1st of January 2029

K-Series currently supports only one certified FDM model:

Checkbox by Taiger BV

  • What’s in the box: Checkbox module, USB charger, USB-C charging cable.
  • What’s not included: Network cable.
  • Other models will not work without additional configuration (i.e., out of the box), so we don’t recommend them.

FAQs

Common questions about the upcoming migration from FDM 1.0 to FDM 2.0.

Who is responsible for migrating from FDM 1.0 to FDM 2.0?

Responsibility for migration always lies with the customer, not Lightspeed.

Partners can support and guide them, but the decision and ownership remain with the customer.

When do customers need to migrate?

— The largest batch of FDM 1.0 devices is not due until 2028–2029.

— Most migrations are expected to happen naturally as FDM 1.0 devices run out of memory.

Is there a formal migration plan today?

Not yet. There is no solid migration plan in place at the moment.

Communication and guidance will trickle down over the coming months and years as deadlines approach.

How will Lightspeed communicate upcoming deadlines?

Roughly 6 months before a deadline, the team will coordinate a GTM team, similar to how iOS and LS K-Series version changes are announced.

Partners will be looped in so they can prepare their customers.

Can partners proactively replace FDM 1.0 units now?

Yes. Partners can sell FDM 2.0 and installation packs to customers who prefer to replace proactively rather than wait for their device to fail or hit a deadline.

What about customers whose FDM 1.0 breaks or fills up before FDM 2.0 is fully released?

— L-Series customers who cannot wait or who have a full or defective FDM 1.0 will be moved to the FDM 2.0 L-Series beta.

— New customers and locations that did not receive dongles will also switch to FDM 2.0. (K)

— For K-Series, only FDM 2.0 should be sold going forward (in Salesforce).

How big is the expected replacement volume?

The number of 9-year-old and 6–7 year-old FDMs needing replacement is expected to be very limited. No large-scale wave is anticipated in the short term.

What should partners tell customers today?

— Migration is coming, but it is not urgent for most customers.

— There is no need to panic-replace working FDM 1.0 units.

— Customers who want certainty or are nearing end-of-life can move to FDM 2.0 proactively through their partner.

— More detailed communication will follow ~6 months ahead of each customer’s deadline.
